municipality of maayon

Many believed that the word Maayon came from the root word “MAAYO”. This is somewhat correct because according to the elders of the place the origin of the name of the place came about this way:

During the Spanish regime, a group of Spanish soldiers came upon a group of men and women harvesting rice. The foreigners in their town dialect inquired from the group what the name of the place was. The group looked each other and asked among themselves what did the name of the foreigners mean, considering that they could not understand their language.

Until one of the natives thought that the foreigners were asking about their harvest and so he answered, “MAAYO MAN”, meaning the harvest was good or bountiful. Considering that the Spaniards cannot pronounce the word well, they repeated the word “MAAYON”.

The group burst into laughter because instead of hearing the word “MAAYO MAN”, they heard the word “MAAYON”. Thus the word Maayon struck and to this very day the place has been known as much.
